Ubuntu saves the day!

March 16, 2009

When everything turns out to be a mess my free Ubuntu CD installer saves the day. It is a one hell of a Friday the 13th when my 3 months old DVD writer can’t read DVD anymore. After awhile it can’t even read CDs. So I took the risk of upgrading the firmware thinking that this might be the solution. But it turns out to be a disaster when the flashing fails and my DVD writer is dead. Bad trip. Just like Home TV shopping, there is more, next is my hard disk drive. When I uninstalled my DVD writer and open up my PC I receive an missing/corrupt error. I can’t log on to Windows. I can’t repair the Windows through recovery console because the DVD writer is not working. I rushed to the nearest computer rentals to check what might have been the cause of the failure on my Windows. But how can I execute those procedures if I can’t access the recovery console. The next day, I went to the store where I buy my DVD writer and told them what happened on my DVD writer. They instantly give me new unit. At last I can now repair my Windows but no luck I still have errors regarding the missing/corrupt files. Then suddenly I remember my Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition installer is order from Canonical. So I try to run it without installing it through the Live CD. And I works and I can access the internet. Up to now I’m still using Ubuntu and I’m happy with it. I don’t want to risk my files on my hard disk so I will bring it to a friend who knows what the right thing to do. If you want to experience Linux for free without installing, order now a copy to Ubuntu.com.

Gran Torino: Get Out Of My Lawn

January 10, 2009

 File:Gran Torino poster.jpg

I thought this movie all about cars and racing but I’m wrong. But I can say that the first one is correct it’s all about car particularly to the title itself the “Gran Torino”.  But I think the car is just an accessory on this film and its variable to the plot. What I’m trying to say is that the movie can be titled by any old or vintage car that is very valuable today. I expect a lot of action on this film like car chases but it turn out to be a drama. I don’t usually watch trailers so I always end up expecting least expected. But this movie will not waste 116 min of your life. Clint Eastwood delivers the acting very well as well as the Asian cast and the story is very light and heartwarming. I love the song in the end credits “Gran Torino” performed by Jaime Cullum, and I’m not surprised that the song is nominated on the Golden Globe Awards for Best Original Song.

Vote for Puerto Princesa Subterranean River

January 8, 2009

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River (PPSR) is now the official entry of the Philippines to the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Last year the voting for National Qualification has ended with PPSR on the top of the list. PPSR along with Mayon Volcano, Tubbataha Reef, Taal Volcano, Chocolate Hills are Philippines entry to the campaign but only one nominee per country will go on to the next round. The organizing committee will select the 21 finalist among the top 77 after the end of this round on July 7, 2009. You can vote once per email address but you can vote 7 nominees just like the previous round. You can use the same email address you use on the previous round. I’m sure that Puerto Princesa Subterranean River will make it again but the question is will it make it to the top 21?

Slumdog Millionaire: Is that your final answer?

January 3, 2009

Danny Boyle really don’t know how to make a good movies but only knows how make the great ones. Don’t judge the book by its cover… the movie poster sucks but it’s the movie that rocks. I’m a fan and I enjoy watching his masterpieces. I don’t have a clue on what the movie is all about. I’ve seen this on IMDB frequently but I don’t go on finding the storyline (I hate spoilers) and all I know that this is a Danny Boyle film. Great story plus great directing is equals to Best Picture. This movie deserve it’s nomination at the Golden Globe although I haven’t seen other contenders (The Curious Case is up next on my playlist). I don’t want to go on details about this film but all I can say that this is 9/10. This movie is a must see but I don’t think that it will be released here in the Philippines. It is released on selected theaters in the US.

DVD blank media: Price over Quality?

December 29, 2008

When I got my new Samsung DVD writer I am excited to use it so I installed it immediately. But when I started using it and burn some data it always gets me an “Invalid Block Address” followed by a “Burn Process Failed” for the nth time. It is frustrating so I tried to googled it up and find some remedy for this annoying error. Many forum threads I have read said that it could be the ODD itself or the firmware, the software (I’m using Nero 8 OEM) or the media itself. So I checked it one by one, the ODD and its OK, the firmware is OK too. I tried to update Nero 8 and its successful and last I check my media. I always buy media disc at CD-R King, the one-stop media provider as the tagline says. This is where we can buy dozens of cheap branded and generic recordable media disc. The CD recordable/rewritable prices varies from PhP 5.00-8.00 while the DVD recordable/rewritable varies from PhP 12.00- 18.00. With these reasonable prices do we have to expect quality media disc? Some say choosing CD-R King product is Price over Quality. If you buy black DVD media disc a lot why don’t you check out the class of your purchased disc? What I found out that blank DVD media disc have their own media ID that determine their own media class.

The Greatest Movie Character is…

December 10, 2008

Empire strikes back! Once again another controversial list from the magazine that brought the 500 Greatest Film of All Time, The EMPIRE Magazine. Last month (I think) when I first saw this list, Empire’s 100 Greatest Movie Character, I was excited to see who’s on the top spot. But I make it nice and slow so I browse it from bottom to top. I was surprised on some of the movie character I knew that I wouldn’t think will be included on the list. But what surprises me a lot is the Greatest Movie Character that tops the list. I have here the Top 13 of the list. Any violent reaction?

The 100 Greatest Movie Characters | Empire | 13. Gollum13

“Master is our friend! / You don’t have any friends; nobody likes you.” Gollum

Played By: Andy Serkis

Film: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Return of the King

Why He’s On The List: Similarly to Yoda, our first fascination with Gollum is with his appearance and his strange speech pattern (as well as being a digitally imposed character), but as the second instalment of Lord Of The Rings progresses, it becomes apparent that he’s not one person, but two. It’s all galvanised by one fascinating, heartbreaking, classic scene, but Serkis’ performance continues to consistently display the demented halfling’s highly volatile state.

Finest Hour: His two personalities arguing over Frodo’s sincerity and fate.
